Introduction. The main criterion for road safety in winter is the adhesion of tires to the road surface. In winter climate conditions, the requirements for road maintenance to reduce road surface slipperiness are constantly increasing. Different countries prefer different models of using de-icing materials. This is influenced by various factors, such as climatic conditions, type of road surface, traffic intensity, environmental aspects, and the economic component. The properties of the material itself are important, as well as the use of variants of different amounts and proportional composition in mixtures of materials under different conditions.
Problems. At the beginning of the full-scale invasion of Russia, the Artemsil plant, which was a supplier of salt for winter road maintenance, was destroyed. Experts were faced with the task of finding alternative de-icing materials to ensure safe traffic on our country's highways in winter. Today, experts continue to research de-icing materials that come from different suppliers in different countries, have different origins and characteristics. Also of great importance is the issue of increasing the efficient use of de-icing materials and improving consumption rates.
Objective. To analyze and take into account the experience and best practices of using de-icing materials in different countries of the world during winter road maintenance.
Materials and Methods. The analysis of the existing experience of handling de-icing materials in other countries will provide an opportunity to implement it in our country.
Results. The article reviews the studies conducted by different countries on the use and handling of de-icing materials.
Conclusions. There is a need to optimize the management of de-icing materials in our country by introducing new methods or strategies. It is necessary to develop procedures for laboratory testing and evaluation of the effectiveness of the use of various anti-icing reagents in the field.
