Introduction. The introduction briefly describes the main factors influenced the subgrades of railways and roads which cause the formation and distribution of various defects and strains. A brief description of the GPR method is provided, the general principle of the Ground-penetrating radar (GPR) operation is described.
Problem Statement. The use of destructive methods of subgrade monitoring doesn’t allow detecting the formation of defects in the subgrade on early stages which in the future leads to emergencies and increases costs for current maintenance. At the same time, the use of non-destructive methods is complicated due to the insignificant experience of their application. One of such non-destructive methods is GPR method.
Purpose. The purpose of the work is to review and analyze existing research related to the GPR method as one of the prospective non-destructive methods for subgrade diagnostics.
Materials and methods. The methods of analysis and synthesis are used in the study of existing experience of the use of GPR researches which are presented in the literature.
Results. On the basis of the research analysis of the use of GPR method, it was determined the historical development and the physical nature of the indicated method. The features of wave’s distribution in rocks taking into account their characteristics were given. The main dependencies and assumptions used during surveys (researches) of various facilities and objects by GPR method were considered. The results of surveys using GPR method were described and analyzed. The possibility of quality control of performed work and comparison with design decisions is shown.
Conclusions. Analysis of the world and national experience of the use of GPR method shows, firstly, that GPR can be effectively used for general survey of extended sections of subgrades. Their main advantages are efficiency of work performance and low laboriousness. Secondly, the use of GPR method, in particular during the study of railway haul is an effective tool for detecting various types of defects in the subgrades and timely eliminating the identified disadvantages.
Due to this, the actual scientific and technical task is carrying out the research and developing recommendations for GPR monitoring and evaluation of subgrades technical state.
