Summary

Introduction. In the introduction to the paper, the common questions concerning the assurance of the terminological congruence of national standards’ provisions, when being harmonized, with provisions of regional or international standards were outlined and also important sources of appropriate regional information in the sector of the transport infrastructure were identified.

Problem statement. The issue of the paper concerns terminological matter in the domain of definitions for the interchange systems on motor roads peculiarly those constituting international traffic arteries and for elements of such systems.

Purpose. The paper is aimed on the analysis of scientific sources and provisions of the EU regulatory acts to state the problems and develop the propositions concerning initial points for the enlargement of the structure of terminology relating the interchange systems on motor roads constituting international traffic arteries.

Results. The analysis of functional requirements and the international motor roads classification with motorways as the main component as well as the terminology relating interchange systems and their elements was performed within the frame of the European Agreement on main international traffic arteries. The stratification for those systems’ elements was proposed and general requirements for the design of interchanges on the motorways constituting international traffic arteries were reviewed.

Also, considering the road building industry experience beyond the European continent, the safety-concerning design decisions for the interchanges’ elements not covered by the above mentioned European Agreement were briefly analyzed.

Conclusions. Regarding the results of the performed analysis it is proposed to state the task to enlarge the structure of terminology for definition of an interchange system on motor roads constituting international traffic arteries and elements of those systems as well, particularly for interchanges as the main component of the safety-concerning design.

As the initial point for the adequate elaboration of terminology, the proposed stratification of elements of the interchange system on motor roads constituting the international traffic arteries may be used.
