Summary

Introduction. In road building industry, the hydraulically bound mixtures (HBM) are identified as the in-plant mixed or the in-place mixed blends of natural or artificial stone materials, sand, hydraulic binder, water, and an admixture, if needed, which form the monolithic layer of the road pavement after compaction and curing under standard conditions. The strength of the layer is largely affected by the binder type. A number of standard hydraulic binders used in the world-wide practice for HBM design consists of cement, lime, fly ash, and slag, which are divided into fast- and low-setting materials and may be used each on its own or in the standard combinations thereof.
Problem statement. HBM may be used in the base layer of the flexible pavement to enhance the load-bearing capacity and also in the base layer of the rigid pavement when constructing on a sub-grade of soils prone to the uneven deformations. But most effectively the base layers from HBM are used with the flexible pavements in terms of reduction of the pavement’s total thickness. This review points the compliance between the Ukrainian and the European practices for HBM design and application and also reveals the need to expand the related criteria stated in the Ukrainian standards.
Results. Given in this review analytical comparison covers the following aspects recommended to approbation:
- general requirements for HBM including HBM grading characteristics (which may include binder) and strength classification;
- general requirements for binder including binder proportion and the minimum values for binder addition related to the binder type and to the conditions of the HBM layers traffic conditions;
- general requirements for HBM testing methods including HBM specimens compaction, curing (hardening), and testing;
- general requirements for HBM layers construction including arrangement of expansion joints in the layer of quick-setting material to ensure good performance of the layer in shrinkage and thermal cracking.
Conclusions. The approbation of the European practice for HBM design and application accepting the results of presented analytical review will promote the adaptation of motor roads design and construction procedures to the increased traffic loadings, including the loadings from heavy goods vehicles.
