Introduction. The introduction to the paper briefly outlines the issue of creating identical technical matter in the process of harmonizing national standards of Ukraine with regulatory documents of other systems in certain areas of standardization.
Problem statement. The topic of the paper concerns the interpretation of English-language terms used to describe structures and structural elements for the design and construction of roads and airports.
Purpose. The purpose of the paper is to analyze the applicability of individual standardized terms for creating identical technical matter when translating standards of other standardization systems.
Results. The standardized solutions regarding the translation and interpretation of the English-language term pavement and derived complex terms, key in the areas of civil engineering and road construction, are analyzed, and the need to clarify the Ukrainian equivalents is shown.
Based on the results of works on national standardization, solutions are presented that were used to ensure the identity of technical matter for describing structures (structural elements) of road and airfield pavement. Alternative solutions for interpreting the key term are also proposed.
Conclusions. A conclusion is provided regarding the limited possibilities, when translating primary sources, of practical application of the terminological equivalents of the English-language term pavement which are standardized at the national level.
It is determined that in order to reproduce the technical matter of primary sources, the interpretation of the English-language term pavement and derived complex terms shall be performed purely on the basis of the technical matter of the object of analysis.
The advisability of finding a solution that will provide a universal interpretation of the English-language term pavement, which is widely used in standardization in the field of civil engineering, is outlined.
