Summary

Introduction. The paper considers the issue of increasing the strength during the repair of non-rigid pavements on a weak foundation using the modern methods of recycling of road building materials.

Problem Statement. At many road facilities, especially during repair of highway of local importance, design engineers face the problem of low strength of the lower layers of the foundation, including soil base. The question is how to strengthen these layers and make it cost-effective, that is with maximum reuse of existing pavement materials and use of local materials.

Research has shown that it is needed to provide the application of stabilization methods using the rigid polymer geogrid or treatment with a small volume of binder by cold recycling method. The upper layers of the foundation should be arranged from pre-milled asphalt concrete crumbs in stationary mixers by cold recycling method.

Purpose. Searching for the possibility to strengthen non-rigid pavements with low strength of lower layers of the foundation by simultaneously applying the stabilization and cold recycling.

Research methods. Analytical and experimental with the use of computer modeling of a multilayer structure, the issue of the recovery of the strength of pavement with a weak foundation including soil base is considered.

Results. It is determined that the lower layers of the foundation can be strengthened by applying stabilization methods using the rigid polymer geogrid or treatment with a small volume of mineral binder by the method of cold recycling. The upper layers of the foundation can be strengthened by producing an organo-mineral mixture from pre-milled asphalt concrete layers, followed by producing the mixture in a stationary mixer.

Conclusions. The performed field studies allowed confirming the theoretically obtained decision on the effectiveness of the proposed solution to recover the strength of pavement with a weak foundation. The obtained solution allows reducing the cost of pavement repair and solving the problem of bituminous materials elimination which will positively impact on environmental safety of the region.
