Summary

Introduction. The road network today, due to the increasing number of vehicles, does not ensure the effective operation of road transport. In addition, intensive destruction of pavement designoccurs. The regional road-climatic and soil-geological conditions of Azerbaijanaggravatethis situation. Therefore, the issue of specifying the design characteristics of the road pavements of a non-rigid type becomes very relevant.
Problem statement. Today, despite the availability of research in this area, no comprehensive, focused analysis and synthesis in the design, construction and operation of non-rigid pavement designarea and taking into account the increasing loads on traffic volume direction of highways, including the international ones, in Azerbaijan, was performed. Therefore, the main focus should be placed on the justification of rational non-rigid pavement designs and taking into account the identification of potential possibilities of soils and road building materials for the structuresoperation, as well as regional features, including the natural and climatic conditions of the country.
Purpose. Improvement ofthe methods for designing the non-rigid pavements on international highways using the concept of durable pavements and taking into account the regional climatic and soilgeological conditions of Azerbaijan in conditions of increasing loads and traffic volume.
Materials and methods. The road-climatic zoning of the territory of Azerbaijan taking into account the method of the design (high) temperatures of asphalt pavements and the distribution of   various soils for the construction of the subgradewas used. A technique for calculating the non-rigid pavementdesign taking into account the high bearing capacity of compacted and reinforced layers of the subgradeis proposed. The ranking of pavement designs depending on the service lifeis carried out.
Results. The obtained results, providing their implementation, will promote savings of material, labor and energy resources, allow the effective using of road materials; and these results are recommended for the use by the designers in road organizations. The possibility of increasing the bearing capacity of existing pavements of international highways is also justified.
Conclusions. Fundamentally new solutions for the development of pavement structures during the design of international highways were developed. These are traditional pavement, pavement with the use of the innovative materials and durable pavement. The main research results and the developed methods will allow providing the possibilityof a widely introduction of the new technological solutions to increase the bearing capacity of non-rigid pavement layers by usingthe additives in asphalt, reinforcing interlayers, as well as using the local materials, and thereby allowing further updating of the normative base in this issue.
