Introduction. A prerequisite for ensuring efficient operation of all transport nodes of the road network is a continuous, barrier-free traffic flow. Correct determination of vehicle time losses at intersections and junctions of roads will make it possible to increase the efficiency of their operation without reconstruction and will allow to accurately justify the need for changing their geometric parameters.
Problem Statement. Research on the main types of maneuvers at intersections and junctions of roads at the same level is important in order to increase the efficiency of their functioning. Intersections and road junctions are the main elements of the road that have a direct impact on the capacity of the entire road, as the distribution of traffic flows takes place at these points on the road network.
A lot of scientific works are devoted to the study of traffic flows, manoeuvres and especially time losses of vehicles at intersections and junctions of roads, such as those of Lobanov, V.M, Hokhman V.A., Khejt F., Driu D. But all known studies provide a general average of the delay of vehicles when maneuvering from a secondary road to the main one and vice versa or do not even include such an important moment as stopping and waiting time during the road crossing.
Objective. Improve the design of intersections and road junctions at the same level, taking into account the peculiarities of traffic at intersections and road junctions at the same level, depending on the intensity of traffic, speed, radius of descent and composition of traffic flow.
Materials and methods. Existing methods for determining vehicle delays at intersections and junctions of roads are based on slowing down before approaching an intersection or junction, crossing a road or performing various maneuvers by accelerating or slowing down while only partially reducing speed on the main road. Delay on a secondary road is only considered on a section whose length equals the necessary distance of car acceleration from intersection speed to the speed on the main road. The analysis of methods to increase the efficiency of intersections and junctions functioning at one level will allow finding a solution to such a question as expediency of changing geometrical parameters of transport interchanges at one level by means of reconstruction.
Results. The article analyzes the possibility of free inflow of the car from the secondary road to the main road and vice versa, taking into account the average duration of the free interval between the cars of the main traffic flow and between groups of cars. Dependence of the duration of free intervals as well as their number on the speed, traffic intensity and composition of the transport flow was found. Several equations are obtained to determine the total delay of transport at the moment of performing different types of maneuvers depending on the type of intersection or junction.
The use of the received formulas when calculating the delay will be useful in solving problems to reduce congestion at intersections and road junctions at one or more levels.
Conclusions. As a result, the study proposes a method for determining the performance of intersections or road junctions under the present conditions, which makes it possible to justify the need for reconstruction based on vehicle delays in the future. This work can be used in project institutes during road project development.
